Make sure to answer all questions associated with the activity.
Design an experiment in which you will test the effect of an acidic fluid on enzymatic activity. (Recall: Enzymes are proteins.) If necessary, it may be useful for you to review the Scientific Method Tutorial (found in the Course Content section of the classroom).
Lab Materials
You may need the following, depending on your experimental design:
Materials in your lab kit:
- plastic beakers or cups
- hydrogen peroxide solution
- a pen for labeling the beakers or cups
- a ruler with centimeter markings
Additional materials you may need:
- yeast
- sample of fresh meat, about 1 cm cubed in size (unprocessed and uncooked, e.g., liver, steak, fish, or poultry—particularly organs)
- sample of fresh vegetable, about 1 cm cubed in size (e.g., potatoes or other root vegetables)
1. What question are you asking? Clearly state your hypothesis.
2. Design an experiment. Provide a detailed account of the materials and methods used to conduct the experiment. Also include the methods for data collection and analysis.
3. Conduct the experiment and record your results below. What did you observe? Which samples showed bubbling?
4. Use your knowledge about enzymes to interpret your results. It may be necessary for you to refer to your textbook. What effect does the acid have on the enzyme?
5. Was your hypothesis supported? What is your conclusion?
APA citations must be included for any sources used, and the questions must be answered completely and thoroughly. Grading criteria for the final lab project is included in the assignment description in your assignments folder. The final lab project must be submitted in your assignment folder by the due date listed on the course schedule.

Experimental design | 20 pts = full credit will be awarded for a detailed description of your experiment. |
Results | 15 pts = full credit will be awarded for stating your observations and giving a detailed description of what happened in your samples. |
Interpretation | 20 pts = full credit will be awarded for interpreting your results with regard to your knowledge of enzymes. |
Photo | 15 pts = full credit will be awarded for including a photo of your experiment. |
Format | 15 pts = grammar, citations, organization of paper. |
