| | Describe at least three ways a person can teach by example according to the article and provide a personal example in which you have demonstrated this concept: In this article, several ways that one can teach by example are mentioned. One of those ways is by "proclaiming oneself as an example to be followed..." It is explained, though that this is not an effective method of teaching by example. Instead one may offer an example of how to do a specific task or action. More deeply, one can teach values, morals and a way to be by setting a precedent with their whole self. in the article it explains, "[But] what we learn from these examples is not simply a matter of mimicry but a complex drama that engages the learner and exemplar in interactive processes of thought, action, and relationship ()." Therefore one can teach by example by guiding learners in an interactive exploration of thought.
Explain how "teaching by example" influences the development of ethical and moral reasoning as well as cultural sensitivity and awareness: In this article there is much discussion of complex teachings by example, such as teaching morals and ethics. It is explained that through giving yourself over as an example you can teach someone to be a certain kind of person- that is, whatever kind of person your example is setting. By creating a dynamic relationship with a learner and allowing them to perceive the example you set and reflect on it, they may develop a sense of morals, ethics and cultural sensitivity through the character example set by another.
"Rousseau categorically denies the educational power of example (p.513) Explain youe agreement or disagreement with Rousseaus philosophy of education as it applies to your experience in gaining knowledge: I disagree with Rousseaus philosophy of education as it applies to ones experience in gaining knowledge. I believe that socialization is a huge part of learning and gaining knowledge. While I surely agree that through socialization one is susceptible to he prejudices and negative examples, I feel that those are also integral in our journey of knowledge. Through socialization we gain the analytical skills, ethical and moral reasoning by sorting through both positive and negative examples and utilizing both experiences to create the kind of person we are.
| | | Three ways a person can teach by example are through modeling, through having the student challenge what they are being taught, and through forming relationships with students. Modeling occurs when a person tries to imitate another person’s actions or behaviors. Since there becomes a point in time when students begin to reason it is recommended for teachers to allow students to ask questions and challenge what is being taught. Last way a person can teach by example is through building a relationship. Relationship is key, there needs to be trust between the student and the teacher. The sort of relationship is “one that depends on the character of the teacher and the ability to nurture a special bond between teacher and student reached the age at which he is capable of reasoning”(McEwan, 2011, p 518). In order to teach by example there needs to be understanding that the student will be an individual who will ask questions and have the ability to reason. Students need the ability to challenge what they are being presented with and make sense of it in their own way. Rousseau is against examples that are set by the societal standards, not necessarily against the educational power of example. One way to educate by example is through writing, which is what Rousseau did. He wrote about how to go against societal standards and to push the boundaries. I agree with his viewpoint of how to educate through example. I think some of the most intriguing courses I took involved the teacher challenging a way of living and making us think if it was ethical and just. Reference McEwan, H. (2011).
