Scenario 5: Anna is an 82-year old Caucasian female who has been widowed for 15 years, lives in Ohio, visits her doctor regularly, and is in generally good health. In spite of her health, she has mentioned more than once that it may be her “time to go.” When questioned about this, she says she is not interested in many things anymore and feels disconnected from the world. Recently, she has noticed signs of mental “dullness” and reduced energy. Concentration and short-term memory are often problems for her. She also has a significant disturbance in her sleep patterns, averaging about 4 hours of sleep, and early awakening insomnia. She wonders if she is depressed. Her circle of social support has become quite small, since many of her friends have died. Sources of stress include loneliness and social isolation.
