Students will compose an exploratory argument in MLA Style on a topic of their choosing from Room
for Debate (3-4 pages). Many important issues today call for arguments to explore them. For this
assignment, you will explore an ongoing issue of your choice from Room for Debate, summarize the
array of viewpoints on the topic, and synthesize these viewpoints as a means of “mapping” a field of
perspectives.
There may be clearly defined opposing viewpoints, but there will more likely be a variety of different
opinions on the topic. If there’s an “opponent” in such a situation at all (often there is not), it’s likely
the status quo or a current trend that, for one reason or another, is puzzling. The essential argument
in this type of piece is the writer’s assertion that a problem or an issue exists—and that the reader
needs to understand it and respond to it constructively if possible.
This will require you to thoroughly explore the debate, determine the primary point(s) of contention,
and present a comparative analysis of the various viewpoints in 3-4 pages. In order to back up your
claims effectively, be sure to summarize/paraphrase and quote sources from Room for Debate
according to MLA guidelines for citing sources in the text (in-text citation) and formatting the list of
Works Cited.
