Purpose:
This assignment allows students to focus on the different rhetorical techniques that combine and create successful argumentation. Students have the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to construct a cogent thesis and well argued essay using research and incorporating outside sources as evidence and support for their thesis.
Outcomes:
- Demonstrate the critical thinking skills involved in exploring, limiting, and focusing the subject in order to produce a thesis statement appropriate for the audience and assignment
- Comprehend, interpret, and incorporate into his or her writing ideas from a variety of sources and points of view
- Produce essays that are well organized, coherent, unified, and sufficiently developed
- Produce essays with appropriate style and correct grammar, punctuation, usage, and diction
- Produce essays with sources correctly documented and cited
Assignment
- You will write a 3-5 research paper (typed, black ink, double-spaced, 1” margins) using 3-4 scholarly sources. You will use those scholarly sources to support your argument.
- You will write about the topic you’ve chosen, using your thesis statement and sources from your annotated bibliography.
- You will begin your paper (as you would a 5-paragraph essay) with an introduction (a weighty paragraph) that includes your thesis statement
- The rest of your paper will include supporting evidence that develops and supports your thesis.
- The conclusion (the final weighty paragraph) is, at its name suggests, the end of your paper. In this paragraph, you will restate your claim, not verbatim, but a creative and reflective manner. Your conclusion should leave the reader with some final thoughts, resolutions, suggestions, etc. about your topic and thesis.
- You will include a Works Cited page with 3-4, properly cited and formatted, source.
