113B Essay 1 Prompt:

Your goal, in this essay, is to enter a rhetorical conversation that stems from the work

and analysis you have been doing in your Weebly website. Your primary source

(primary conversation) will be Annie Leonards The Story of Stuff. You are to use the

main ideas and arguments that Leonard makes as a starting point to

understand/interpret how you fit in within that conversation. The essay is your

opportunity to enter a conversation that deals with larger social implications. In other

words, if what Leonard says is true, what are the consequences of living within a society

that relies on consumerism so heavily? How does your particular passion/interest (the

one that is the focus of your website) play into all of the things she says? What

particular debatable larger issues are occurring within your theme? For example, if your

theme is make-up/beauty products, there is also an opportunity to look at issues

surrounding body image. Does society pressure people to want to look a certain way?

And, how does that fit into what Leonard says? It is an opportunity for a deeper analysis

of social interconnections. Everyone in this class is responsible for linking a larger

implication, like the example above, within their essay.

Remember that you do not have to agree with Leonard. You do, however, have to use

her ideas to respond somehow. You are entering into a conversation (debate) with

Leonard. Please do not simply re-state the things she says. Contribute to the

conversation somehow with ideas of your own. You should develop your own opinions

and arguments, and not just report on what is happening. Therefore, please use

relevant quotes and ideas that are central to her arguments. You must use at least 2

credible secondary sources that will help to establish whatever it is you are

arguing/counter-arguing. You must use these secondary sources to interpret Leonards

ideas, not to move away from them. This essay should be a minimum of 5 pages,

double spaced, equivalent on MS Word. I would like you to add a tab to your Weebly

site titled Essay 1and imbed the text as a part of your website. Do not simply upload a

file. Please make it look like it is part of your website. Sources must be cited at the

end/bottom of the page. Feel free to add images and video throughout the essay if

applicable.
