Bibliographic Essay
Each student will produce a bibliographic essay of at least six citations. At least one of the citations must be a peer-reviewed article (academic journals and other selected sources as defined in the library session). At least one source should be a citation from an electronic medium (e.g. a WEBSITE). You should also obtain one source from the point of view of the government of the country that you are examining or from the point of view of a government regarding the topic that you are examining. These materials may be found through BBC Monitoring accessed through LEXIS-NEXIS ( http://me9qj4aj8y.search.serialssolutions.com/log?L=ME9QJ4AJ8Y&D=LXU&J=BBCMONINR&P=EJP&U=http%3A%2F%2Fmuhlenberg.idm.oclc.org%2Flogin%3Furl%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.lexisnexis.com%2Fhottopics%2Flnacademic%2F%3Fverb%3Dsr%26csi%3D10962 ) The remaining items should be a combination of government documents, additional peer-reviewed articles, popular press articles, and manuscripts or books. The bibliographic essay should be on a relatively narrow theme. A limited, though by no means exhaustive list of possible topics, would include: Political participation in a selected country; Leadership in a selected country; Interest group behavior in a selected state; the role of a selected International Organization (UN, EU, or World Bank) in a public policy area; environmental problems and policies in a particular state; the development of democracy in two proto-democratic states.
Bibliographic Essay Format
1/2-1 page on why the topic is worthy of review
1/2-1 page standard citation plus a description of the significant themes of each work and how they relate to the overall topic of the annotated bibliography
4-6 pages critical analysis of the works cited drawing comparisons and contrasts among and between the works cited. Possible comparisons and contrasts include but are not limited to:
1) different points of view regarding the probability of the success/failure of the organization, policy, or policy process that is the topic of the bibliographic essay;
2) more or less comprehensive presentation;
3) level of background knowledge assumed or needed to comprehend the
work cited;
4) writing style - sophisticated, elementary, etc.;
5) bias.
In order to write this section, you should group and regroup your works cited according to each criteria. For example, if your topic were the problems in Bosnia-Herzegovina, you might make the following comparisons in two of your subsections: (1) works ABC are in favor of the policy; DEF oppose the policy; with A&F marking the extremes; and (2) works AEF are biased in favor of one actor’s point of view, while BCD are more objective; A represents an extreme Serb point of view; E a less extreme, though still biased, Serbian perspective; F represents the Moslem viewpoint.
Include quotes where appropriate, with proper citation.
