essay
In Robert Warshow’s brilliant essay, “The Gangster as Tragic Hero” (1962), he outlines how America, a notoriously cheerful, upbeat culture dedicated to happiness, created the darkest, modern antihero, the Gangster. In your essay, show 1) how Walter White (2008-2013), the antihero of Breaking Bad, is both similar and different from Robert Warshow’s definition of the gangster. 2) From that textual difference, explore how Breaking Bad “as experience of art” represents a different American viewing public than that of the late 50s, when Warshow was writing.
