What do you believe are some effective methods for working with scientists and policy makers on topics that involve scientific uncertainty? For this Discussion topic, please discuss two methods and explain why these methods are effective. In your answer, discuss if you think it matters who employs these.
In the RIO Declaration, Principle 15 of Agenda 21 states, “In order to protect the environment, the precautionary approach shall be widely applied by States according to their capabilities. Where there are threats of serious or irreversible damage, lack of full scientific certainty shall not be used as a reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent environmental degradation”(UNCED 1992). What is the difference between the precautionary approach and the precautionary principle? How might those two manifest differently in interpreting a specific environmental policy? Does one give more leeway than another for decision makers? What might this mean for the long term effects of a policy? Give a specific example.
