- First, summarize the article using the following steps:
- Read the article for all you can understand the first time through. Pay attention to the title, any subtitles and headings, and words or phrases in italics or in boldface.
- Go back and reread more carefully. Underline or highlight key points and important passages. Take notes as you read.
- In your notes, write down the main ideas and the key supporting points.
- Prepare the first draft of the summary, keeping these points in mind:
- In the summary, identify the title and author of the work.
- The first sentence of your summary should also be written as a topic sentence and should contain the main idea or thesis of the original work in your own words.
- Do not write an overly detailed summary. Remember that the purpose of a summary is to reduce the original work to its main points and essential supporting points.
- Your summary should be in your own words.
- Quote from the material only to illustrate key points. For this paragraph, limit your quotations to one quoted sentence or phrase.
- Then, provide an analysis. Keep the following points in mind:
- Your analysis is not just your opinion.
- Ask yourself whether you are convinced or not convinced of the article’s main point.
- Consider why the article is effective or not effective.
- In your analysis, use specific evidence from the article to back up your evaluation.
