James Joyce’s “Araby”

Choose ONE of the prompts below and respond in a meaningful way in a 3-5-page paper.

#1: Discuss how the idea and symbolism of religion relate to the spiritual journey of the narrator. Be sure to refer to specific quotations from the text to support your main points.

#2: Explore the duality of light and dark in the story. How does Joyce use these ideas to help us understand the narrator, especially in terms of his passing from a state of innocent childhood into that of “tarnished” adulthood. As always, include relevant quotations from the story to support your primary claims.

Your paper will be evaluated on a variety of elements, including a strong, focused thesis statement; logical organization; clean, natural transitions; persuasiveness of argument, and an overall sophistication of discussion and development.

In addition:

1)      Your essay must follow MLA guidelines. Refer to OWL for citation and formatting rules.

Failure to follow these guidelines may result in a lowering of your paper grade.

2)      This is not a research paper; you only need to cite the story itself. (However, you are welcome to refer to secondary sources if you’d like to.)

3)      Remember that MLA requires that your essay be typed in 12 pt. Times Roman.

4)      I take plagiarism very seriously. If you have any questions regarding how to properly cite sources in your paper, please ask me.

5)      A “Works Cited” page is, of course, required. It does not count toward the 4-6 pages.

6)      3-5 pages means just that. Please stay within this range as best as you can.
