English Essay on Faulkner's, “A Rose for Emily”

For this essay, you are to write an interpretation of Faulkner's, “A Rose for Emily.”   Your interpretation must be based upon the literary elements (plot, setting, protagonist, exposition,foreshadowing, etc). Remember “theme” is an element, also.

LENGTH: 800-1000 at least (about 3 full to 3-1/2 pages) words.  Please indicate word count on your final paper at the bottom.

FORMAT:  MLA, including standard page formatting and documentation such as page numbers in parentheses along with a works cited page. 

• Use present tense  
• Do not use “I” or “you”  
• Reference the author and the name of the story in the first sentence of the paper.
• Block quotations are 4 or more lines of text indented 10 spaces or 1 inch. Use these sparingly.  More than two is unacceptable.  
• Using quoted material from the text: Begin paragraphs with a topic sentence, not a quotation. Introduce the quotation; use the quotation being sure to put the page number in parentheses at the end of the sentence; then explain in some detail how the quotation supports your interpretation of the story. Your interpretation is your thesis.
