First, some things that this essay is not:

1) This is not a descriptive essay.  Your purpose is not to describe the cause or effect of something.

2) This is not an essay wherein you talk about "The cause and effect of X" - it will need to be more focused.

What this essay is:

1) This is a thesis-based persuasive essay that's purpose is to have you prove that two things exist in a causal relationship.  Take smoking, for example: You would start by researching the effects of smoking.  There are many.  More specifically, you could research the effects of smoking on lung tissue.

Your research could show you that smoking tobacco causes lung cancer.  It is not enough to say that, though.

You would need to prove it.  Doing so would require you to show each link in the chain that connects tobacco smoke to lung cancer.  

It is tempting for students to want to simply describe the various effects of smoking, but that is most certainly not what you are being tasked with here.

So - to recap:

This essay is asking you to prove that two things (keep it tightly focused) exist in a causal relationship.  This is not done through simply describing or stating the effects of X.  You must prove through research and analysis that X directly causes Y.

Many students approach this essay from the wrong direction initially.  Instead of describing various causes and effects of something, your role will be to prove that two things exist in a causal relationship.  Proving that two things are related in this way goes well beyond simply saying that they are.  Each step in the causal chain needs to be established.  

It is important to remember: show, don’t tell.  Don’t just say that something proves something else – you must always demonstrate exactly how and why it does so.  Show your readers what you mean – don’t just say it is so.
