This course is project-based, which means that you will select and design your own project to work on throughout the quarter.  We’re providing guidance, below, but feel free to consult your professor regarding other ideas or directions you would like to pursue.  For more information on each assignment, consult the Course Information tab in the Student Center.

You will CHOOSE ONE of the following categories to focus your essays on this quarter:

CATEGORY 1: Imagine someone was willing to give you $100,000 dollars. The only requirement is that you have to spend the money to address a problem or need in your local community, or another community around the nation or the world. This quarter, you will work on spending that money!  
Audience: Community council, including the mayor

CATEGORY 2: Identify a problem in your own workplace, or a process that needs to be improved.  Imagine that your boss has tasked you with fixing it. This quarter you will get to research and propose to fix this problem.
Audience: Your boss and your work team

CATEGORY 3: Identify an ongoing important issue in your home or family. This quarter you will finally find ways to solve this and present your findings to your family!
Audience: Members of your household

Assignment 1: Personal Essay

For this essay, you will choose a reading selection from the Webtext. Write an essay in which you summarize the piece, identifying the community or communities discussed, describing the experience discussed in the piece, and stating the main point of the piece. Finally, discuss how the experience or experiences described in the essay are similar or different from your own.
