write a three pages

To write informed responses to the discussion . . .

Read:

“The Monitor is Burning?” (Pages 21 – 29), from The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman—which you can find in Moodle as a PDF

“Chapter 1: Getting Started: Writing and Your Career,” (Pages 1 – 30) from Successful Writing at Work

Watch:

“In Defense of Rhetoric: No Longer Just for Liars,” from Clemson University.

Please note: this discussion requires a 3 part response.

1.            In “The Monitor is Burning?” Friedman discusses how workers in the Indian call center disguise their accents and adopt western names.  After watching the video, “In Defense of Rhetoric: No Longer Just for Liars,” to what extent do you think this practice is a practical use of rhetoric, or a means of deceiving the audience?

2.            How would you feel about changing your name and accent while at work? Do you think the call center workers would ever express any displeasure with their jobs in their interviews with Friedman?

3.            Based on Chapter 1 of Successful Writing at Work, how have you adjusted your tone and style to suit a specific audience and purpose—either in speech or in writing?

In your responses, please use specific details from the texts and the video, as well as your own opinions, experiences, and outside readings. You are welcome to challenge the class materials. When responding to your classmates’ posts, please work to add to the conversation by expanding on their ideas, asking additional questions, or even politely disputing their remarks.
