Media Short Essay

Your short essay should be one page single-spaced.  

Read Dr. Martin Luther King's Letter then  choose a news article (current event), a video clip (TV show or movie), a musical composition (song), or a work of art (painting, drawing, sculpture) and argue that the chosen object (i.e. song, video clip, painting, etc.) highlights a theme, idea, or argument expressed in in Dr. Martin Luther King's Letter.

Media Short Guidelines

1-     You must include a link to the media source at the end of your media short

2-     The media short should have two sections headings: (1) Introductory Statement and (2) Connection to Media Source.  Each section heading should be underlined and written in boldfaced print. Within each section, students should write in paragraph form.

3-     Media short must be in Microsoft Word format andfont size must be 12 point and must be Times New Roman.

4-     Media shorts should be at least one page (one single-spaced page is recommended.)

5-     Left and right margins must be 1 inch (should be the default setting on MS Word).

6-     The heading should be at the top left of the first page; it should include the student’s full name, the professor’s name, course and section numbers (IH 0852: 4747), and the date (e.g. 3 August 2014).

7-     You must provide citations for any thoughts or ideas that are not your own; in-text, parenthetical citation (e.g. King 5) is the proper mode of citation.  You do not need to submit a bibliography. 

Media Short Rubric

Intro:Author makes a claim (i.e. this work of art represents King’s certain idea because…) and he/she gives clear and accurate summary of the sections of the reading that apply to his/her media short. Author provides appropriate in-text citations. (20/20 points)

Connection to Media Source:Author makes a clear and persuasive connection to the assigned readings, and he/she provides detailed evidence from the readings to support his/her claim—explaining why the evidence provided supports his/her claim. Author provides appropriate in-text citations. (20/20 points

Organization:Media short follows the prescribed format with no deviations. Author includes a link to the cited media source or includes a copy of the media source (i.e. cut and paste a picture of the painting cited). Author uses correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. (10/10 points)
