Read each of the selections listed written by each author, then write a thoughtful response of about 500 words to each of the authors you read.  A response might discuss one work or one character, the author and the work, various responses to the work, the work’s significance, the effect the work has had, or so on. Regardless, the response should be substantive and must show clear evidence that the student has given the writing serious thought. Do not summarize a work.  Consulting source material is not necessary; however, be careful to give credit using MLA style if you consult sources. Lengths of each response might be different; for instance, for one, you might write three pages, and for another, you might write three paragraphs. In other words, length is not as important as substance. When I read each of the journal entries, I want to know that you have given critical thought to the literature.

Complete this assignment following the guidelines for writing given in the course syllabus:  12 point font; Times New Roman or Arial; Microsoft Word; double-spaced.  All five of the reader-response journal assignments, a total of about 2500 words, are due at the same time in one Microsoft Word document. Each response should be titled using the author’s name:  Heine, Flaubert, Baudelaire, and so on. Any journal or entries submitted any way other than through the Assignments feature will be deleted.

The document should be formatted as a Word Document (.doc or .docx) or in rich text format (.rtf).  Documents formatted otherwise cannot be opene While it is not necessary to consult sources when writing the responses, should you choose to do so, be certain to use MLA-style documentation, including in-text citations and a works cited page.  Failure to do so will result in a reduction in the grade. Remember, though, that this assignment is asking for your thoughtful opinion about each of the writings you do not need to research unless you wish to do so.

All five of the responses must be in one Microsoft Word document
