In Week Five of this course, you will submit a four- to five-page Literary Analysis in response to one of the topics from the approved List of Writing Prompts.This week, you will choose the prompt you would like to explore, offer some information on what interests you about this prompt, and supply a working thesis and key ideas you would like to develop. Though it might seem early to choose your topic, with only five weeks in the course, it is important to start early to best set yourself up for success.

After reviewing the list of prompts, choose one that you would like to explore. In addition, you should choose the text you will discuss from the List of Literary Works. Be sure to choose a text or texts as directed in your prompt of choice.

SENCOND ASSIGNMENT VERY SHORT

Prepare: Prior to beginning your initial post, read the required materials and review the handouts, Plot, Theme, and Conflict and List of Literary Techniques. In addition, read Chapters 4 through 7 of Journey into Literature and choose a story from the textbook.
	Reflect: All stories have a theme that forms the plot. Also, literary elements and techniques contribute to creating and highlighting the theme. Reflect on the theme and literary elements and technics in the story you have chosen to read.
	Write: Your initial post should be at least 200 words in length. The minimum word count does not include references.In this discussion you will Describe the core conflict represented in the story. Describe the theme of the story. Select three literary elements/techniques in the story and describe them. Explain how the elements/techniques illustrate the theme and conflict expressed in the story. Incorporate readings found in Chapters 4 through 7 to help illustrate the points you make.
	Respond to Peers: Respond to at least two of your classmates’ initial posts. Each response should be at least 75 words in length and should address two or more of the following points: Do you agree with your classmates’ perspectives? Why, or why not? Be specific. Ask a specific question to encourage further discussion on the topic. Challenge your classmates’ interpretation of literature and/or point of view. Do a small amount of research and share what you learn with your peers about the topic discussed in this post.

THIRD ASSIGNMENT VERY SHORT AS WELL:

Prepare: Prior to writing your initial post, read Chapters 1 through 3 of Journey into Literature.
	Reflect: As we explored in the “Why Read Literature?” discussion, literature can provide us with a multitude of perspectives, ideas, and experiences. Additionally, there is a long tradition of critical reading and writing about literature (i.e., analyzing literature to seek a deeper understanding about various interests and concerns). Chapter 2 focuses on these ideas. Consider why people write and how that writing may benefit us.
	Write: Your initial post should be at least 200 words in length. The minimum word count does not include references. In your post, answer the following questions: Why might a writer feel compelled to write about literature? How does it benefit us personally and/or professionally? What kind of writing and thinking skills do you hope that you will develop in this course based on the description of writing about literature in Sections 1.1, 2.1, and 2.3 of the text? Incorporate readings found in Chapters 1 through 3 to help illustrate the points you make.
	Respond to Peers: Respond to at least two of your classmate’s initial posts. Week 2 Assignment: Annotated Bibliography

For this assignment, you will write an annotated bibliography on three sources. For detailed information on how to create your Annotated Bibliography, please see the sample created by the developer in the assignment prompt below.

In your Annotated Bibliography, you will

Identify your primary source(s) and two secondary, academic sources. If you chose to discuss two poems in your Week One assignment, each must have its own entry in the Annotated Bibliography.
Summarize each source and explain how the source supports your working thesis. These summaries should be 100 to 150 words for each entry.

For the Annotated Bibliography assignment, you will write annotations for three sources. One source should be a primary source. Next, you will choose two secondary sources that are additional to the text.

The two sources you locate must be academic sources and come from peer-reviewed journals or other scholarly publications. For information on finding sources within the Ashford Library, please view the ENG125 - Literature Research tutorial.

The Annotated Bibliography includes a citation of the source in APA format. It also includes a brief summary of the source.
