ENG 315

I HAVE PART  1. BUT INSTEAD OF USING INCOMPETENCE, SINCE IT'S A BROAD SUBJECT, I'M TRYING TO USE:  employee incompetence which leads to low productivity in the work place and stress is the focus of such incompetency. This article works because it tells of how stress can effect an employee in the workplace, which in turn can be negative on production. It includes studies from all over the world on how employees who are highly stressed are 57% more likely not to engage in any job function. Those same employees tend to feel as if the management is after them, merely because they aren't functioning. A solution to this? Communication and understanding your employees. They truly are the face of the company, and in order to get them to be product, the management needs to engage with them and get to the root of the issue.

Dyble, J. (2014). Workplace stress linked to lower productivity. Employee Benefits, 5.

HERE'S PART 1:

Problems and dilemmas at the place of work can range from a mere disagreement within the employees to complex issues that affect the performance of the organization in a negative manner. Understanding the issues that can cause problems in the workplace is the first step in ensuring that the organization does not suffer. For instance, one problem within an organization that can lead to a serious problem is incompetence among the workers. When some of the workers within an organization are not able to work well, there is always a problem which may affect the company’s performance and output. Incompetent employees do not do their work efficiently and effectively and as a result, they need to be supervised, or the supervisor needs to look into their work a second time which can be time-consuming as well expensive. When this is a persistent problem, there is need to look for solutions or alternatives to curb the problem.

Overview of Alternatives

Incompetence can cause conflicts in the workplace and in many cases managers and supervisors expect the workers to resolve conflicts on their own before they escalate to the levels that require the attention of the manager. According to Mayhew (2016), some of the solutions to this common problem is the need to acknowledge that there is a problem sometimes not just about the employee incompetence but also a lack of motivation among the workers, overload of work, or other  motivational related problems. In this case, it is important for the managers or supervisors to be calm and nice to the workers who might, in turn, motivate them to do their work competently. The second solution requires proper training since every employee requires specific training to his or her area of specialization, the managers or supervisors need to find out the problem and then conduct proper raining to improve the workers competence.

Criteria

In order to measure the worth of each of the two proposed solutions, five standards will be used.

  • Cost- this criterion will measure the cost effectiveness of the solution in addressing the problem. This will also measure the expenses and amount required to take the affected employees through solution process or program.
  • Time- this standard will address the time it will take to implement the solution and how long it will take to solve the problem
  • Durability- this measures how long will the applied solution last and how long the solution will impact the problem and the organization
  • Efficiency- this addresses how well will the solution implemented will address the problem and provide a lasting settlement.
  • Practicality- this measure addresses how practical the solution is in solving the problem

Methods

Before recommending a given alternative to the employer, there is a need to conduct research to give the best alternative. This process involves weighing alternatives and evaluating them without any prejudice. The research also involves considering the multiple criteria and identifying the advantages and constraints of each alternative. According to MakeitRational (2013), in order to pick the best alternative, there is need to list evaluators, individuals who will be involved in the alternative evaluation process. The research will also involve assigning weight to the criteria and selecting the ones that are more relevant to providing a viable solution. Furthermore, there is a need to collect all the alternatives together and calculating the total value based on the alternative that satisfies most criteria to the highest degree.

In Part 1 of your Justification Report assignment, you built up the following sections: Problem Statement, Overview of Alternatives, Criteria, and Methods. In Part 2, you will revise Part 1 based on your instructor's suggestions and add to it the following sections: Evaluation of Alternatives, Findings and Analysis, and References.

Use the basic outline below to draft your paper. Organize your responses to each question under the following section headings:

  • Evaluation of Alternatives (for Questions 1-3)
  • Findings and Analysis (for Questions 4-5)
  • References (for Question 6)

Using the provided template, write Part 2 of a single-spaced report in which you:

  1. Include and revise the sections from Assignment 2.1 (Problem Statement, Overview of Alternatives, Criteria, and Methods) per instructor suggestions.
  2. Research the two (2) alternatives (i.e. possible solutions) that you've identified in your Part 1 Evaluation of Alternatives section. Record bibliographic information during research.
    1. Example: You might research other organizations that have attempted similar solutions to the problem you have identified and explore the results of those experiments.
  3. Use what you discover in your research to evaluate each alternative by each of your five (5) criteria.
    1. Example: If your research revealed that four (4) companies similar to yours increased productivity after allowing their workers to telework from home three days per week, you might conclude that one of your suggested alternatives – in this case, the option to telework from home three days per week – satisfies one of your criterion of “Productivity” as a high-potential solution to a problem you’ve identified (of decreased worker morale and productivity at Doe’s Electronics). However, additional research might frustrate a recommendation of this alternative if it is found to fall short of other criteria while a second alternative fares better. For instance, a telework alternative might be found to be too costly to implement; too frustrating for consumers who prefer daily, in-person customer service; or too divergent from the company’s brand, “Always there for you!”
  4. Organize the assignment by your criteria. Explain in narrative form how each of your two (2) alternatives stacks up against your first criterion. Next, explain how each alternative stacks up against your second criterion, etc.
    1. Example: An abbreviated outline of what this longer section might look like based on the above example is below (Note: Only the first two [2] of five [5] required criteria are included to give you a feel for the structure). Your researched findings, represented as circled bullets below, should be explained in two to five (2-5) sentences. Include in-text citations and follow up with References in APA style):

      Evaluation of Alternatives

      • Productivity
        • Alternative A: Telework from home three (3) days per week
          • {narrate findings based on research article 1 here}
        • Alternative B: Offer two (2) extra Floating Holidays to each employee per year
          • {narrate findings based on research article 2 here}
      • Cost
        • Alternative A: Telework from home three (3) days per week
          • {narrate findings based on research article 1 here}
        • Alternative B: Offer two extra Floating Holidays to each employee per year
          • {narrate findings based on research article 2 here}
  5. Briefly summarize in narrative form the major discoveries that emerged from the Evaluation of Alternatives section.
  6. Include a chart like the ones below to illustrate at a glance:

  7. Include an APA style (6th edition) References page that documents the two (2) sources (minimum) that you used and cited in-text in your Evaluation of Alternatives section. You may use secondary resources, or you may include one primary source and one secondary source. Remember that both in-text citations and References must be included (to avoid plagiarism) whenever you are directly quoting, summarizing, or paraphrasing researched material.

Your assignment must:

  • Be typed, single spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, your name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
