Dissertation Research Topics #1
Relationship between leadership styles and organizational success in woman-owned and –led small businesses.
Based out of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Perreault (2016) examined the relationship between the success of businesses that were either owned or managed by women and how or if their leadership styles had any impact. The problem addressed during this study was “poor leadership and management skills contribute to small business failure and closure” (Perreault, 2016, p. iii). The idea that women have a disadvantage in leadership due to their lack of experience or provided opportunities contributes to their inability to effectively lead (Perreault, 2016). Perreault (2016) indicated that few studies existed to support or deny the relationship. For the purposes of this study, Perreault (2016) used “three outcomes of leadership - extra effort (motivation), effectiveness, and satisfaction with leadership” (p. 180-181). Findings showed that female leaders were more associated with transformational leadership style and female business owners were more task-oriented. The leadership problems were that female leaders or business owners lacked experience in leadership compared to male leaders and business owners. The opportunities of this study was there it provided support and evidence that there is a relationship, but there are few studies that explore the concept and the relationship between leadership styles and organizational success in woman-owned and –led small businesses.
Dissertation Research Topics #2
The relationship among leadership styles, organizational culture and the learning organization: The moderating effects of organizational culture at the middle management level.
In this research, Kim (2014) explored the “effects of organizational culture on the relationship between leadership style of middle management and the learning organization in the Korean business settings” (p. iii). The purpose of the study was to examine the “relationship among leadership style, organizational culture, and the learning organization (Kim, 2014, p. 6). The concept is that middle managers are vital to leadership. Middle managers provide the necessary support and encouragement to the organization which improves the overall performance of the organization (Kim, 2014). Findings showed that as it relates to the hierarchy of Korean business organizations, transformational leadership of middle managers was the most effective (Kim, 2014). Middle managers are key to increase performance of employees within an organization by encouraging employees. Kim (2014) indicated that although there are many studies that examined and explored the relationship of organizational culture, leadership etc, there were very little that focused on the effects of middle management. As a result, transformational leadership style proved to be the most effective leadership style when examining the relationship among leadership styles, organizational culture and the learning organization.
Dissertation Research Topics #3
Leadership styles and organizational outcomes in engineering societies' local chapters.
Duerr (2010) focused on the various leadership styles to include, transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire and the relationship to demographics variables such as leaders’ background, other leadership styles, the openness to participate and how other organizations activities and events correlated to the effectiveness and satisfaction the organization. For the purpose of this study, the problem was gathered by viewing the organizational outcome of local affiliates. Duerr (2010) started that “local chapter success is considered via organizational outcomes:(a) amount of effort inspired by the leadership, (b) effectiveness in meeting local chapter goals, (c)effectiveness in meeting national society goals, and(d) satisfaction in associating with colleagues” (p. 4). The results of the study was confirmed what other researchers have found, which was the relationship between transactional leadership style and organizational effectiveness along with laissez-faire leaderships style (Duerr, 2010). The opportunity with this study is that there are many other studies related to the same topic which helps to support the findings.
