Week 4 - Discussion 2

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses.

Assessment Driven Instruction

Although there are many options for integrating technology in the classroom, teachers have to be careful that this is used as a teaching tool and not a teaching replacement.  One way to use this tool as an addendum to classroom instruction is as an assessment tool that provides you and the student immediate proficiency feedback.

Conduct a search of free online games for learning English by using terms such as “ELL free games,” “learn English games,” or “ESL games” and then take some time to play some of the games you’ve found.  Compare and contrast at least two different games that assess the same skill for the same proficiency level.  What do both have in common?  Using at least one peer reviewed article found on the Ashford University library, explain how the games you’ve chosen can accurately assess student language and skill using research as a foundation. How are they different in terms of providing an accurate assessment of skill again using research to support your claim? Which is your favorite, (again keeping in mind the focus of assessing a proficiency skill) and why? Which is your least favorite and why? Please make sure to provide a citation for all three games you are evaluating.*

*See the section on “Computer Software/Downloaded Software” for APA citation guidelines at
Reference List: Electronic Sources (Web Publications)

Guided Response:  Respond to at least two of your peers by first playing the three games posted and then reading the evaluation of each.  Do you agree with your peer’s final decision regarding the effectiveness of the assessment?  After your own experience with these three games, explain to your peer how the one you feel most accurately assesses a proficiency skill that can be used to drive teacher-delivered instruction. Be sure to provide additional references as needed to support your post.

Carefully review the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate this Discussion Thread.
