Economic Essay Question

David Ricardo was concerned that the corn laws (high tariffs on imported grain) would severely hamper the development of manufacturing because it would reduce profits earned by the industrialists.  Explain carefully the steps in his analysis.  Then discuss how his reasoning might or might not apply to today’s debates over globalization, barriers to free trade, profitability, and productivity gains.
