Commun 103 – Introduc5on to Public Speaking

First Speech Assignment: Informa5ve Speech on an Issue of Community Concern

The basic goal of this assignment is for you to deliver a speech to your classmates on a topic you will research thoroughly and to which they may feel some connec8on. You do not need to persuade them to take any ac8on, but your audience should come away from the speech with a sufficient understanding of what the issue is and why it is worth their a>en8on. Your speech must be informed, polished, and audience-aware. It is advised that you select an issue that you care about, but keep in mind that just because you care deeply about something doesn’t mean others will, too. It is your job to inform your audience in a way that makes it clear why they should give the issue addi8onal considera8on.

The opportunity in this speech is to prac8ce making informed, cri8cal decisions about engaging audiences and ideas. That starts with the issue you select. Your issue should be one that is appropriate for the 8me you have. “Global hunger” is indeed an important issue, but not one that can be talked about sufficiently in five minutes. In fact, trying to take on too big an issue in a small amount of 8me may result in your speech sounding rushed and uninformed, and that can end up discouraging your audience from taking the issue seriously. Narrowing the topic down to “Milwaukee’s growing hunger crisis among homeless teens” would be more appropriate, and in five minutes you could offer a lot of good informa8on about that issue without trivializing it. You’re never going to be able to tell your audience everything there is to know about your issue, so part of this process is learning how to make good decisions about what informa8on is necessary, and what informa8on has to be leK for another 8me. Making good decisions about informa8on begins with this speech.

Your speech should specifically inform the audience on the following points:

What is the issue?
Why is this issue a concern at this 8me?
Why should this audience care about this issue?

Keep in mind the fundamental rule of speaking to an audience: The audience is not there for you. You are there for the audience. Your speech must make sense to them. Your speech must provide sufficient informa8on to them. Your speech must connect with them.

The addi8onal minimum requirements for this speech are as follows:

The speech cannot be longer than five minutes.

You must cite at least three different and appropriate sources in your speech. Wikipedia and the dic8onary are not appropriate sources. All claims of fact and tes8mony must be cited appropriately.

The speech must demonstrate clear and purposeful organiza8on, and be delivered intelligibly. The speaker’s manner and body language should be appropriate for the occasion.
An outline for the speech needs to be provided according to your Instructor’s specifica8ons.
