Many scholars and researchers contend that LD is not a disability and should not remain a category. What is your response to this contention? Do you agree or disagree and why?

 


In your opinion, should a learning disability be diagnosed by a discrepancy between academic performance and IQ score or should it be diagnosed by how well a child responds to intervention? Why?

 


In the lecture for module 5 we learned that a communication disorder is “an impairment in the ability to receive, send, process, and comprehend concepts, or verbal, nonverbal, and graphic symbol systems” (“Foundations for Understanding Special Education:  Defining Special Education and the Impact of Cultural Diversity of Special Education Grand Canyon University,” 2010).   Learning disabilities are determined by examining the discrepancy between standardized achievement scores and academic performance in a given academic area.  Many students with learning disabilities have difficulty processing information, much like students with communication disorders.    Many students with communication disorders have difficulty learning academic content and exhibit problems with receptive and/or expressive language. What are some strategies you could think of that would help students process information?
