Week 3 DQ’s responses

Take the role of a special educator and respond to at least two of your classmates by discussing any challenges you might experience or questions you might have in implementing curriculum-based measurements in your classroom.  Be sure to check back on responses to your initial post to address your peers’ responses, challenges, or questions.

DQ 1 first classmate to response to is Valerie McCullers

In taking on the role of School Administrator I would explain to my teachers why curriculum based measurements can be a benefit for all students because (1) it helps teachers to plan effective instruction; (2) it helps estimate student progress (3) it documents student progress and (4) it helps communicate with parents or other professionals about student progress.  I would further address why this is important in terms of accountability from a (NCLB) No Child Left Behind perspective as well as from a Special Education perspective (EP) in that, understanding the makeup of the special education population helps us understand what we can expect our special education students to achieve. Because the special education population is varied, every student will be able to achieve at a different level.  That’s why special education requires (IEP) Individualized Education Plans.  There are several strategies and tools that teachers can use in their daily instruction to effectively monitor student progress such as, having students graph their own progress or the teacher can use student performance data to continually evaluate the effectiveness of their teaching in order to make more informed instructional decisions.  Another tool a teacher can use to effectively monitor student progress is to measure their students’ academic progress on a daily or weekly basis using probe samples.

Second one is Tehseen Zohair

As a school we have been making remarkable progress, we know are children are doing well but there is no supportive evidence to show how much progress students have made. We give individual progress report to students that informs the parents how their child is doing, but this progress is not charted on a sheet to show parents of special need children how much improvement has been made on any particular subject like English, math, science etc. It does not compare or show the rate of progress. Through curriculum-based measurement parents and teachers can find out how well their children are progressing in learning the curriculum. It tells us how effective our teaching strategies have been. Through week-by-week information we can get a data, which can help us guide our instruction and make future decision. So if a child is not making adequate progress teacher can change the way of teaching and try to find the type and amount of instruction the child needs to make in order to meet the academic goal. CBM graphs make the goals and child’s progress, clear to parents as well as teachers and help us communicate effectively (McLane). NCLB act has made schools more accountable, and through CBM schools can monitor student’s growth and progress. The power of CBM is that the tool provides teachers with a valid and reliable way to determine a students level of performance as well as the student’s rate of progress toward specific performance goals (Goo, Watt, Park &Hosp, 2012) While conducting IEP meetings it can give us valid data to show to parents and other Para professional specific information about the child’s progress and the success of the instructional methods being used. Based on these results we can develop our future goals and objectives .If we cannot justify why and how special education department is trying to improve the education of students then as team we cannot be successful as we could. CBM will provide us with evidence to show our parents and regular teachers, sometimes when parents pressurize us or debates that their children are capable of taking more challenging task and achieving better result we can share this evidence based curriculum measurement. Special education specifically has to use those decisions to drive the placement, goal writing and instructional success of each student. It will make monitoring of each individual student more efficient and easy.
