Week 2: US Imperialism and Empire Building

Assignment:

Explain whether or not you believe the U.S. is still an empire and whether or not this is a good thing.   You can take any position you wish as long as you support your ideas with historical and contemporary evidence.

Step 1: Find a working definition of “Empire.” Remember that imperialism and empire are not the same thing!

Step 2: Decide if the US is or is not an empire.

Step 3: Use historical and current examples that support the US being an empire or not.

Step 4: Look at your definition and your examples. Do the examples help prove that the US is or is not an empire?

Step 5: Write your 300-600 word paper in which you give the definition of empire, clearly state if the US is or is not an empire, and if this is a good thing. Support your ideas with specific historical and current examples, and cite your citations.
