Discussion - Trade Policies and the Cars You Buy

Many experts thought the influx of foreign cars in the 1970s was a minor "blip" on the car buyer's horizon. They felt that consumers wouldn't be swayed by the offerings from Germany, Japan, and other countries. Yet recent studies show that 5 of the top 10 selling cars/trucks are made by foreign companies. Additionally, Chrysler and General Motors have experienced severe financial problems in the past few years. Given these facts, do you think our government should do more to "protect" the domestic manufacturers with policies that would make it more cost effective for car purchasers to buy cars from domestic companies vs. those from foreign companies? Why?
