Discussion Questions
I have to respond to the following statements of my classmates. Please provide at 200 words to each statement.
I think it is important that an organization's purpose evolves with the growth of the company. In the example used in this video, Whole Foods Co-CEO, John Mackey explained the importance of expanding the business purpose to match current trends, as well as for improving the organization's current strategy in areas of philanthropy and relationship building with suppliers.
Originally, Whole Foods social responsibility strategy was to only support non-profit organizations, and conceptualized this was enough to satisfy their social responsibility to the community. However, as the company evolved it became apparent that more was needed in this area, so the strategy changed to help the countries they trade and receive goods. In addition, Whole Foods management implemented a strategy that included involving its customers and suppliers in its philanthropic efforts. The stakeholders became part of the evolution of this strategy, which subsequently resulted in increased profits. "Companies that engage in social responsible investing use positioning to exert pressure on businesses to adopt social responsible behavior themselves" (Davis, n.d., para. 3).
Today, healthcare administrators are recognizing the various parts and processes of new system. In particular, the inter-relationships and alignment, between the Board and the Chief Executive Officer, or integration between the Strategic Plan and the employees.
In the past the Board of Directors established the system. However in today's perspective the inter-relationships and alignment is not only about parts and processes within the system, but also to the system and its environment with patients, clients and employees (Authentic City Consulting, n.d.).
The perspective of the new organizational system focus on structures that provoke behaviors that determine events - rather than reacting to events as was done in the past. These events maintain perspective on performance by focusing on the patient outcomes that the organization wants to achieve, in comparison with the industry across the nation.
· The healthcare industry continuing experience recurrent organizational problems:

According with Reid, Compton, and Grossman, 2005 "The four level system models for health service managers are: (1) the individual patient; (2) the care team, which includes professional care providers (e.g., clinicians, pharmacists, and others), the patient, and family members; (3) the organization (e.g., hospital, clinic, nursing home, etc.) that supports the development and work of care teams by providing infrastructure and complementary resources; and (4) the political and economic environment (e.g., regulatory, financial, payment regimes, and markets), the conditions under which organizations, care teams, individual patients, and individual care providers operate" (para.1).
For health care teams to become truly patient-centered, and achieve the highest patient quality assurance the rules of engagement between managers and patients must be shifted. The managers must become more responsive to the needs and preferences of patients and involve them and their families in the design and implementation of the organizational care plan. Organizational managers must provide patients with continuous, convenient, timely access to quality care (Reid, Compton, and Grossman, 2005).
Hospitals administrators should understand the internal and external influences that will impact nurses and physicians performance. Over the past ten years a lot of research has been conducted to examine causal elements in the workplace that may negatively impact the well-being of employees, and affect the quality of patient care. Health care workers workplace environment is stressful, and sometimes their home environment has many challenges. These challenges and demands can cause illness and work exhaustion, which can have an effect on the patient health outcome.
An ICU environment is one of the most stressful environments. The research objective was to analyze the relationship between ICU physicians and ICU nurses perceptions and the quality of patient care. In addition, the research sought to obtain data on identifying work stressors to target the possible elements that cause illness within a health organization to then make efforts to improve those areas in the planning and strategy process. I agree this is a highly stressful environment that deserves health care leadership to consider a process to remove some layers influencing workplace stress in this area such as, staffing appropriately. Many can attest that nurses receive the brunt of reviews when patients are not happy or satisfied with their quality of care.
