Many students are not aware that the Joint Commission (or TJC, they no longer go by JCAHO as you may have previously known them) isNOT a governmental regulatory agency. They are independent and are paid to accredit hospitals, but it is not mandatory.

Can you describe an experience you had in your workplace with the Joint Commission or another agency? Did it go well or poorly? Why? Did your facility learn anything about patient safety? If so, what?

Examples of Governmental health care agencies

a) Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)

b) Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

c) Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)

d) Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)

Examples of Nongovernmental agencies

(1) Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF)

(2) Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (TJC) (most are surprised to find this is not a governmental agency)

(3) National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA)
