Discussion Question

The Supreme Court upheld most of the Affordable Care Act in 2012. The implementation of the Act has gotten off to a rough start. Locate and summarize an article about the impact of the Affordable Care Act on businesses or employee health insurance.

First response

The Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010 to help all Americans obtain healthcare. The program would be a federal program with a pricing index based on the income of the employee. Previous employees that were denied by conventional health insurance due to severity of illnesses/injuries would now be covered. The Act requires companies with more than 50 employees to offer healthcare coverage. Businesses that change their current insurance carrier to this program will receive a tax credit.

Unfortunately for employers, the lucrative health insurance benefits previously offered as an incentive for applicants and employees may no longer be an option. According to the article, one third of all employers that currently offer employer-sponsored insurance will stop. For employers that do so, this would mean that they would experience a financial gain, but for employees, they would be earning less from benefits but paying more for federal sponsored healthcare. This provokes the discussion if employers would need to adjust base pay or additional benefits to make up for the difference in an employer’s overall earning. In my opinion is adjustments weren’t make to compensate for the loss of healthcare, the social contract made between the employee and employer at the beginning of employment would be broken.

Another aspect of employee benefits and compensation involves the employer matching competitive market insurance comparison for like-wise companies. To keep themselves competitive, organizations will have to evaluate what other companies in their industry are doing in regards to health care coverage. To attract and retain talented employees, companies will have to evaluate their health care plans and ensure that are intensive.

·        The focus of the article to I chose for discussion on the impact of the Affordable Care Act is concentrated on disease prevention. It emphasized that America needed change in the way health care and the needs of the American people is conducted/processed. By providing affordable clinical services to Americans that could not afford them prior to the Act will create preventive care measures. By providing health care coverages services such as breast cancer screenings, cervical cancer, mental illness screenings, diseases or virus control measures, and immunizations it will promote prevention and lesson illness.   It goes on to discuss that with the improved clinical services it provides employment opportunities’ and funds grants for small businesses to allocate health care and wellness in the work center.

The article concludes that the Affordable Care Act impact is needed to prevent and promote the health and wellness of the American people. By utilizing prevention strategies in the Affordable Care Act it will lesson illness and disease.
