Assignment 1: Discussion: Decision Making

Read the synopsis of the scenario you viewed at the beginning of this module:

The CEOs of both companies have asked for a decision support system (DSS) for the new organization. The IS staff needs to find out about how each company currently gathers data, uses it for decision making, and disseminates it. The data may be financial, operational, or any other. Based on this information, the IS staff is to recommend the best decision support system.

Use the framework of the following four questions to direct your research:

• What do we know or understand about the situation?
• What do we not know and need more information about?
• Define TPS, DSS, and EIS and discuss how an organization can use these systems to make decisions and gain competitive advantages.
• Discuss business processes and their importance to an organization.
