Discussion Question

For many managers hiring employees is not a fun process.  Managers must consider whether promoting from within is best or hiring from outside is the best course of action.  Each has its own inherent advantages and disadvantages. 

Describe two advantages and two disadvantages to promoting from within and hiring from outside.  Also, for each disadvantage, offer strategies to overcome the disadvantage.  As usual, cite an academic resource or personal example to support.
