The buffer of the project is the concentrated aggregation of safety. It is the added time in the schedule to account for "what ifs" and "murphy's law" type of unexpected events. For example, if a particular a task takes two days to complete, then maybe we schedule it for 2 ½ or 3 days to provide buffer (or slack). This can be done in percentages as well. If the particular task should involve 10% of the project time, then maybe we schedule it for 12%. This last method would reach a total over 100%, but that is okay since some of the activities will have a lesser actual time than others; providing balance.
