discussion post - human resource management
Suppose a retail store instituted an "English-Only" rule for one of their departments after a non-Chinese speaking customer complained that the employees in that department were saying bad things about him in Chinese after trying to return a purchase. The owners of the store stated that the policy was necessary to ensure safety for their customers.
Discuss the following:
- Did the owners of the retail store break any laws? Why or why not? If so, which ones?
- Do you feel that the actions of the store owners are discriminatory?
- Should employers be able to require that only English be spoken at the workplace? What if it's necessary for safety reasons?
