Class, as our society becomes more dependent on the use of technology we essentially manage our professional and sometimes personal lives in this manner. We become more vulnerable to certain security issues. However, most people would like to maintain their privacy in a world driven by knowledge management systems and digital technology. The challenge is how to strike a healthy balance somehow. Please review the attach article on the USA Patriot Act and the current issue of “Apple vs. the DOJ” and discuss with the class your take on at least some of the issues below:

  1. Class, please read the news article on the DOJ vs. Apple below and it’s related links. Also, read the attached file on “Debating The USA Patriot Act”. What are your thoughts on the issue of national security vs. privacy in this case? Do you agree with any of the government approved surveillance methods in order to ensure national security? Do you think these methods are needed and why? Do you agree with the author? Why or why not?
  2. In the case of “Apple vs. the DOJ”, what are some of the arguments that can be made to defend the government’s interest in this issue to ensure national security? Discuss, based on the analysis below, the textbook and your personal experience. Why is it important to a secure environment? Should the government have access to the iPhone data, why or why not?
  3. What are some of the arguments that can be made to defend Apple’s position as a private company that has promised to protect the privacy of it’s customers who purchase their products? Should all of their customers’ data be accessible by the government if needed? Why or why not?  How would this impact their business bottomline? Why is protecting customer privacy and secure data important to this company? Discuss, based on the analysis below, the textbook and your personal experience. Feel free to compare and contrast both sides of this issue.
  4. What are some steps that can be taken on an individual level to maintain your privacy in a digital technology technology and knowledge management era? Please share any ideas or suggestions with the class.
