Our most powerful memories are multisensory memories.  A child who burns his hand on a hot stove or candle, will likely avoid causing that pain again because of the strength of the memory.  The smell of a cologne/perfume can remind us of a special someone.  What is the evolutionary impact of memories being linked to more than one sensory experience?
