Discussion 4.2: Emotion and Controversy Actions

Obviously Langston Hughes' Mulatto (pp. 1615-1639) is a very emotional play.  Please write sketches of each of the characters.  If you were going to direct this play, who would you cast for the major roles? (TV and movie actors are just fine.)  How would you ask the actors to manage the emotions?  Would you have them control the emotions and the controversy, or would you ask them to "let it all hang out"?  Why?  What is the central theme of this play, and what steps would you take to make sure that the audience understands the theme?
