profileAbdualsslam

Your assignment for class today will be due on Monday, by 8:00 a.m. It will be posted.

Please complete the following assignment:

*Read the short story,"The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. There is a link to the story in the content section, under short stories and poems.

*Watch the video of "The Lottery." I will post the links to the Youtube video. The film is divided into two video clips.

Do not try to just watch the video. Some of questions will be centered around the short story.

I will post discussion questions on the board later this afternoon.

The short story

please answer the following questions;

1. Were you surprised by the ending of the story? If not, at what point did you know what was going to happen? How does Jackson foreshadow the ending? Conversely, how does Jackson lull us into thinking that this is just an ordinary story with an ordinary town?

2. In what way does the setting affect the story? Does it make you more or less likely to anticipate the ending?

3. In what ways are the characters differentiated from one another? Looking back at the story, can you see why Tessie Hutchinson is singled out as a "winner"?

4. Jackson gives interesting names to a number of her characters. Can you explain the possible allusions or symbolism of some of these?

*Delacroix
*Graves
*Summers
*Bentham
*Hutchinson
*Warner
*Martin

5. After reading the short story and watching the film version, which version conveyed the theme and symbolism in the strongest manner? Why? Explain.
