Teen Behavior
Managers must respond appropriately to the difficult challenges associated with trying to balance the sometimes-conflicting goals of employee discipline and employee rights. There are major issues and laws associated with employee rights and privacy that organizations must understand when managing their employees. The policies, practices, and procedures that organizations should follow when they discipline or discharge employees are often poorly written or not followed. Above all, managers must conduct themselves in an ethical manner in all management-employee interactions. Read Dana Wilkie’s column, “Teen Behavior Isn’t Just in High School; It’s Also at Work.” If 3 in 4 workers report that they’ve witnessed “adolescent” behaviors in the workplace, you can imagine the headache this creates for mangers. Volunteer a work-related example—not using any names—of the type of behavior described by Wilkie that you have observed or been involved in as the supervisor.
- For each example, identify the gender and approximate age of the employee and his or her supervisor who handled the disciplinary issue.
- Briefly describe the background of the disciplinary issue.
- Identify which steps of the disciplinary process that were followed, omitted, or done poorly.
- Identify the outcome of the situation—discipline issue was resolved and employee stayed employed at the organization, employee was discharged, etc.
