From the e-Activity and case study, determine the key reasons why economic freedom is so critical to multinational companies (MNCs). Provide one (1) example from the information that you learned about China to support your response.
Economic Freedom is critical to the preservation of other freedoms, those which some might call more fundamental. Ironically, it is economic liberals (I believe FDR started this craze) that argue that freedoms mean nothing without the means to exercise them. What does this mean to me? Freedoms mean nothing without property. And property means nothing when the government can take it away on a whim--that is, if the government can simply snatch your property from you, then you have no freedoms. Why? Let us consider the case in which you criticize the wrong member of government. That member can use current regulatory laws to strip you of property--perhaps not as harsh a punishment as jailing, but certainly a tool to keep you in line, to keep you from mustering the courage to criticize. Hypothetically, the federal government could easily use its rather broad interpretation of eminent domain to force you to sell that house you like so much for sub-market if you forget to give a donation to your senator's campaign fund this year. Decent argument?
Economic freedom is critical to generating the broader-based economic growth that brings more opportunities for a greater number of people to work, produce, and save. In other words, ensuring greater economic freedom is directly related to preserving and enhancing dynamic upward mobility, that’s why it’s critical for MNC’s.

Managing across borders is not easy. The international dimension complicates the already difficult issues of strategy formulation and implementation in purely local firms. Multinational managers, however, should try to find and exploit the opportunities hidden in the complexities of international situations. It is precisely because multinationals tap into such opportunities that they successfully expand throughout the world, and that they develop a sustainable competitive advantage over local firms.

Economic Freedom leads to profits and economic growth. Multinational organizations and managers need pay attention to economic freedoms because it affects the individual quality of life and prosperity. It promotes personal choice, voluntary exchange, the ability to compete in different markets and protection of self and personal property. Institutions become a part of economic freedom because there is a legal structure and laws in place that protects the rights of the owners. Successful economies create an environment where the most opportunities lead to a happier and much healthier society.
The government in China controls everything, which reduces economic freedom. They have regulations for personal choice, voluntary exchange, the market condition, government expenditures and taxes. These limitations restrict the ability to enter into occupations and different types of business activities. By censoring what their citizens see on television, see on the Internet or even hear on the radio, the Chinese government continues to spread their communist beliefs.
According to our textbook, the 4 major religions of the world are Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. It is very important that multinational managers pay close attention to the beliefs of individuals and the community to conduct a successful people overseas.
Christianity places an emphasis on life, labor and happiness. This is the most ideal for multinational organizations because they experience more freedom to conduct operations.
Islam submits to the will of Ala and managers are expected to respect their religious beliefs. For example, followers must pray several times a day and managers must allow this to happen. Another example is the acceptance of lower productivity during certain times of the year when they do not eat, drink, or smoke from dawn to dusk.
Hinduism has an order of occupational status in their society. It is unacceptable for a lower cast member to be the leader or manager of a higher cast member. For example, a laborer cannot lead Kings and Warriors.
Buddhism follows the reality of world suffering and how to be free of suffering. If an organization is to conduct business in countries this is dominate in this religion, they must promote strong individual qualities but also teamwork and religious ethical understandings. The company and the individuals must be harmonious together.
