You are meeting with Mrs. Gains, and it begins with an overview of a business problem. Mrs. Gains and her staff must be able to generate reports concerning employee certifications and education. "These reports are not for us," she explains, "but for our hospital and adult care facilities that use our scooters. They're frequently asked by auditors to provide this information, and we must respond with current information immediately."

Asking a number of clarifying questions, you gather a few more pieces of information about the project. At most, no more than two people would need to generate a report or edit the data at one time. All access would be localized to the Seattle local area network (LAN). It must be easy to use and accessible by Mrs. Gain's staff and/or the executive team at all times. "That's why I thought a spreadsheet would work best," she says. "Everybody understands how to use a spreadsheet."
