Assignment 1 Persuasive Essay Draft Discussion

We will discuss each of your full rough drafts of the Persuasive Essay in this discussion assignment. Please take care to read the lectures in preparation for completing the draft. Even though this essay draft is “rough” in the sense that you have not had time to work through a revision, you still will need to carefully cite your research and include a reference page.

Assignment Guidelines:

By Week 5, Day 3, post your rough draft to the Discussion Area. Prior to composing the essay, make sure you have carefully reviewed the feedback you received on your introduction/thesis and the claim/evidence paragraphs in Week 4. If you have questions about the feedback, please contact your instructor. The main reason that we have worked on the essay in small parts throughout the course is so that you would have a lot of the important writing for the full rough draft already completed.

Assignment Requirements:

1). Your rough draft should be developed to at least 1,000 words (the final draft will need to meet a 1,250 word minimum requirement.)

2). Post your essay as an attached APA formatted document (see Weeks 1 and 3APA lecture for formatting guidelines)

Participation Requirements:

By Week 5, Day 6, comment on at least two of your classmates' essays. We have worked on various writing projects together, but this one is perhaps the most important. As a reader, you have to assume that the writer is attempting to persuade you. Are you persuaded?

To simplify the peer-review process, we ask that you comment on the following features that you have also worked through in your own drafts:

Questions to complete the peer review:

  • Commenting on purpose: Is the thesis clear, argumentative, and engaging? Do the arguments clearly support the thesis? Suggest how the writer might strengthen the thesis and connect argumentative points more powerfully.
  • Commenting on audience: Were you persuaded as a reader? How might the writer strengthen this persuasive purpose? As a reader, can you suggest anything about your experience reading the essay that might help the writer improve the presentation of the argument?
  • Commenting on form: As you feel comfortable doing so, discuss the essay’s form. Did you find the organization effective? Did the writer incorporate his or her evidence well and cite it using (what you know now) about APA in-text citation? How could the writer improve the presentation of the essay?

1). Your rough draft should be developed to at least 1,000 words (the final draft will need to meet a 1,250 word minimum requirement.)

2). Post your essay as an attached APA formatted document (see Weeks 1 and 3 APA lecture for formatting guidelines)
