DB04 Materials Planning

profiledaglaf

At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue by responding to at least two other posts from students. The first contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Wednesday of each week. Two additional responses are required after Wednesday of each week. Students are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early and often, as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance and participation.

The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content and the DB question. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of each unit.

The director of manufacturing to whom all the manufacturing supervisors report, feels like he always gets the brunt of mistakes by other departments. He is hoping you will be able to solve his and his supervisor’s endless challenges. He asked you to visit for a lunch meeting and discuss what the supervisors might expect to be different for them. He is assuming they will have a much easier job because everyone else will do a better job before him.

Be prepared to discuss the following specific points:

What are typical manufacturing supervisors' challenges, frequently created due to no fault of their own?

Under newer, nontraditional manufacturing and operations methods, how can these problems reduce?

In your own words, please post a response to the Discussion Board and comment on at least 2 other postings. You will be graded on the quality of your postings.

The director of manufacturing feels like he always get the brunt of mistakes by other departments.  He has ask me to help solve his and his supervisor’s endless challenges and help find a way to insure that there would be first time quality before every making it to his department.  I have provided some information to show why there are challenges and I will also provide information that would also help reduce these problems.

What are typical manufacturing supervisors' challenges, frequently created due to no fault of their own?

Work not defined, drawings not updated, MRP system not updated regular. For instance suppliers need 300 components and the system shows you have 500.  You go to pull the components only to find you only have 75.  How could this happen?  It happened because the person who is responsible did see the paper work to remove the 425 components.  This means the manufacturing is short on the product and will not met the customer needs. Rejected parts are another one.  If it is not marked rejected in the system the supervisors would have no idea the part was rejected and not available. Changes to lead time would be something else that would cause challenges that would be at no fault of their own.  (M.U.S.E., 2013)

Under newer, nontraditional manufacturing and operations methods, how can these problems reduce?

Problems can be reduced by holding inventory.  Holding inventory will help fill unexpected changes in demand and deliveries from suppliers. “Inventory is a way or preserving excess capacity. On the days when demand was light, the workforce overproduced.  Their work is stored as inventory and now if there is a day with very high demand they are able to support the demand of the customer. (Inventory Management Review, 2005)

Yes, holding inventory can be costly but without inventory you will find yourself challenged to meet the customer needs if you do not have enough product on hand.

Cutting down on work in process (WIP) is also a way to reduce these problems.  Making smaller batches with more “frequency from suppliers (JIT), producing only when you actually have an order or by achieving more accurate demand projections.” (jkc.thespatialists.com, 2005)
