The relationship between autism and vaccines has always been known as negative.  Many people believe that certain vaccinations cause autism.  Autism spectrum disorder is a broad label that is used for several disabilities.  Asperger’s syndrome, pervasive development disorder, high-functioning autism, atypical autism, and autistic disorder all fall under the category of autism spectrum disorder (Parritz & Troy, 2014, p. 120).  There are many theories as to what exactly causes autism.  Vaccinations have been at the heart of this matter since the number of children being diagnosed with autism has increased every year.  “Childhood vaccines and immunizations have also been repeatedly and convincingly ruled out as causes of autism” (Parritz & Troy, 2014, p.133).  Despite numerous claims and studies that do not support the correlation between vaccines and autism, there is still a major debate.

Personally, I do not believe that vaccines are the cause of autism spectrum disorder.  I believe that genetics, prenatal complications, and diet all play a role.  Every school district has their own policy regarding required immunizations, which can cause a conflict with some parents.  Like I stated previously, even though there has been no link between autism and vaccines but not all are convinced.  This is a very touchy issue with some parents, as it should be.  The main consequence for not having vaccines is that your child is more exposed to certain diseases and illnesses and your child puts other children at risk as well.   “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward” (Psalm 127: 3, ESV).  In this verse, we learn that when we receive the gift of a child we need to trust in Him for guidance and provision when raising our precious gifts.  I would advise all parents to put their trust in the Lord.  If they feel conflicted about vaccinations, then parents should not be forced to abandon these convictions.  Parents may have to find other means of schooling their children other than the public school system.  However, that is a small price to pay when having your child’s best interest at heart.
