Have you ever had to write a bad news letter or letter of apology? See the various sample letters in Chapter 12 Writing on the Job text and answer the following:
- Describe the situation briefly (without names) and tell us how you decided what to write.
- Explain your reasons for doing it the way you did it.
- Did anyone else edit or proofread it?
- Explain why or why not.
If you have never written a bad news letter or letter of apology, assume the role of a customer service director for a company that manufacturers sandwich grill machines. An irate customer has just mailed his grill back to you and complained that it malfunctioned and burned him. See Sample 4: Letter Responding to Complaint in the Writing on the Job text. You do not actually have to write the letter; just answer the critical thinking questions above about what you would say and why. Be sure to explain your rationale.
