Have you ever had to write a bad news letter or letter of apology? See the various sample letters in Chapter 12 Writing on the Job text and answer the following:

  1. Describe the situation briefly (without names) and tell us how you decided what to write.
  2. Explain your reasons for doing it the way you did it.
  3. Did anyone else edit or proofread it?
  4. Explain why or why not.

If you have never written a bad news letter or letter of apology, assume the role of a customer service director for a company that manufacturers sandwich grill machines. An irate customer has just mailed his grill back to you and complained that it malfunctioned and burned him. See Sample 4: Letter Responding to Complaint in the Writing on the Job text. You do not actually have to write the letter; just answer the critical thinking questions above about what you would say and why. Be sure to explain your rationale.
