Current Issues Periodic Assignments

For this term, all students are required to complete three individual issues article assignments related to the various topics covered during the term. Each issue article is worth a maximum of 50 points.

The purpose of these assignments is to reinforce the concepts that will be covered this term and to provide students with “real world” applications of otherwise nebulous concepts. Issue article assignments should be based on the broad issues we will cover this term as well as current events affecting governmental and not-for-profit organizations. This includes governmental financial accounting and reporting, governmental budgeting, financial condition of local governments, fraud and abuse in governmental and not-for-profit organizations, measuring performance in governmental and not-for-profit organizations, audits of governmental and not-for-profit organizations, grants made to/by governmental and not-for-profit organizations, and professional ethics of and related to governmental and not-for-profit organizations and engagements.

Students are to select articles from any newspaper or periodical as the basis for their three issue article assignments. Students may only submit one issue article assignment per topic area covered this term. For example, only one article may be analyzed and submitted related to fraud/abuse in governmental organizations. These assignments should be no more than three pages in length (no less than two (2) pages please), well organized, double-spaced (maximum font size of 12), grammatically correct, and professionally presented. A copy of the article that serves as the basis of the analysis must be attached to each assignment submitted.

 Structure of the paper should loosely follow the format below.

1. Identification of the general topic area addressed by the article.

2. Brief summary of the article.

3. Discussion of the issue(s) presented in or by the article.

4. Discussion related to the role financial accounting and/or reporting played in the issue (if applicable).

5. Student thoughts on the issue and its resolution, impact, etc.
