Current Events 2
MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO ALL THE THINGS LISTED UNDER REQUIREMENTS.
Assignment instructions:
The goal here is to be looking at things currently happening in the world, in our country, in our community, and to be examining and evaluating what is being said about these things. More than that though, I’m also asking you to form your own opinions and to start conveying them in a persuasive manner. I’m letting you choose your events and your sources. If you are absolutely stuck, let me know and I can give you an event to look at and maybe some sources as well (this is not an excuse to be lazy on your part). The last assignment we will do in this class is a research type essay, so consider using these current event essays to explore topics that you are interested in writing on
Requirements:
- 500-750 words each.
- You must read and analyze at least two separate sources on the event you choose.
- Events must have occurred within the last year.
- Everything must be written in your own words. I do not want to see any quotations, unless you are quoting what someone said verbally. Paraphrasing is ok.
- These must be written in paragraph form. No bullet points.
Organization Guidelines (you do not have to follow these exactly; they are guidelines only):
- Introduction
- Introduce the event.
- Introduce your sources. Provide titles, dates, and places of publication.
- Give reasons why you selected this particular event. Explain why it is interesting and relevant to you and your audience.
- Provide background information, if necessary.
- Body
- Information about the event
- 5 Ws: Who, what, when, where, why
- Significance of the event
- Your reaction to the sources you read
- Do you partially/totally agree/disagree with the points raised?
- Do you partially/totally agree/disagree with the way the points are raised?
- Information about the event
- Do you agree with the ideas but disapprove of the style, language, tone, or attitude of the authors?
- Pinpoint weaknesses and strengths in the arguments or provide additional aspects, alternatives, and solutions to them.
- Evaluate the ideas and the way they are presented (are they sexist, biased, irrelevant, subjective, disappointing, etc.?)
- Conclusion
- Do not summarize.
- Explain your own opinions on the actual event and/or the sources you looked at.
- What’s the next step? Suggest an avenue for further thought or discussion.

As I am an international student, my writing doesn't look like it's been written by a native speaker so please make sure that you use simple English words and please stick to the word limit.
