Research Proposal

Research proposal consisting of 10 pages. The paper will be due on 10/31/2016.

Outline of Paper:

1. Introduction- minimum of 1 page summarizing what you will discuss in your paper

2. Literature Review-minimum of 13 synthesized scholarly articles

3. Theory Application-minimum 1 page

4. Data and Methods- minimum 1 page

5. Expected Results- minimum of 1 page summarizing your findings

6. References-(This is does not part of the 10 pages)

    

Paper MUST be 10 to 12 pages long, 12 point font, Times New Roman, with 1 inch margins. (It can be double-spaced.)  A TITLE PAGE, REFERENCE PAGE, OR ANY EXTRA PAGES OR FIGURES WILL NOT COUNT TOWARD THE 10 to 15 PAGES. IT NEEDS TO BE LEAST 10 PAGES OF CONTENT!!

Introduction: You must write a minimum of one page to introduce the paper. The introduction must contain the purpose/objective of the paper and research questions.

Research Questions

The Main Topic is: What is the relationship between being mentally ill and incarceration?

Primary Question: What is the relationship between being mentally ill in prison vs not mentally ill in prison?

Secondary Question 1: Why are so many mentally ill people ending up behind bars?

Secondary Question 2: What percentage of prisoners are mentally ill?

Secondary Question 3: What is the relationship between mental illness and sentences length?

Literature Review: For the next several pages, you must summarize at least 13 articles from google scholar or academic search complete. All you need to do is go to google scholar online and find at minimum 13 scholarly articles on your topic (make sure you reference them in the paper) and discuss the articles.  Do nothave to discuss the statistics. You need to read and understand the article but you do not have to discuss the methods or statistics. You must read the abstract and discussion to understand the articles though. Summarize and synthesize the articles and try to find themes throughout the articles (such as gender, age, race, or other related themes).

Theory: This needs to be a minimum of 1 page. For your paper, choose a theory that best pertains to your topic and apply it. You must describe how the theory was developed including the theorist/theorists, and how the theory explains the crime or crime topic you chose. Remember to cite where you retrieved your material.

Methods: This needs to be a minimum of 1 page. Generally, a methods section consists of the following segments: data, sample, measures, and analysis.

Include:

1. Where you will get your data. (Will you do a survey or use secondary data?)

2. Who or what will your sample consist of?

- What is the population?

 - How will you get your sample

- What type of sampling strategy will you use?

3. What is your dependent variable?

4. What are your independent variables?

5. How are your variables conceptualized?

6. How do you operationalize your variables? (how are you going to measure them)

Expected Results Here you are to provide a one page description of what you expect the results of your study to be. Include your hypotheses for your research questions and why you expect the results to be that way. Be sure to cite any sources used here.
