For this assignment, go to Thomas (named for Thomas Jefferson), the Library of Congress' website for research: http://thomas.loc.gov/home/thomas.php . The current session (the 114th Congress) has a House of Representatives and a Senate with a Republican majorities, but they don't always agree on policy. This, frankly, is exactly what the founders intended when they created a bicameral legislature.
Find H.R. 1745, a bill filed by Rep. Rosa DeLauro, a Democratic representative from Connecticut. If you did it right, you should be looking at "to allow a credit against tax for surrendering to authorities certain assault weapons."
Write an essay about this bill. Make sure your essay includes the following information.
What would the law proposed by this bill do? What problem is it trying to solve?
To what committee or committees was it referred? What's the bill's current status?
Who seems to be for this? Who seems to be against it?
Look at the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. What does it say about the right of citizens to "keep and bear arms?" How do you think that right should be interpreted? Should there be any limits?
What do you think about it? If you were a Congressman or Senator, how would you vote?
Submit in Word. Cite your sources.
