Research question (RQ)

Is there a relationship between the sex of the consumer (IV) and the model of vehicle rented (DV)?

Hypothesis statements

(H0): There is no correlation between the sex of the customer (DV) and model of vehicle rented (IV).

(H1): There is a correlation between the sex of the customer (DV) and vehicle rented (IV).

Example

Chi-Square Analysis (one DV, one IV)

RQ: Does sex (IV) have any influence on Telecommuter Status (DV)?

  • DV: Telecommuter Status  (0=No, 1=Yes) - qualitative, nominal variable
  • IV:  Sex (1=Male, 2=Female) - qualitative, nominal variable

HO: There is no relationship between sex (IV) and Telecommuter Status (DV).

HA: There is a relationship between sex (IV) and Telecommuter Status (DV).

Why use Chi-square analysis?

  • The DV is qualitative, so only frequency/proportions can be obtained; we cannot obtain a mean or standard deviation.
  • There is one qualitative IV.
